After 12 editions, the 1000 du Sud having used all the great paved passes within reach, it became difficult to innovate. For the thirteenth edition, we offered a revisited version of the 2018 route.

A warm-up in the Alpes Maritimes (Col de Bleine, route d'Aiglun, Col de la Couillole)

A series of passes at 2000 m : Cayolle, Vars, Izoard, Lautaret (Cayolle has not been climbed by the 1000 du Sud since 2014, and never by the - hard - southern slope)

The road in balcony of the Roches d´Auris, D211A (instead of the Col de Sarenne)

The Col du Solude, about halfway through, with 2.5 km gravel, the only unpaved section on the 1000 (it is worth it)

The now familiar Col du Parquetout

Le Dévoluy with the Col du Noyer and our dear Col du Festre

The Col de la Haute Beaume, followed by several passes in the Drôme (Pennes, la Chaudière, la Sausse, Ey)

Ventoux (via Malaucène) for dessert

As we described in 2018, this is a great tour in the mountains, with lots of quiet and often spectacular back roads.

Depending on the time of day, traffic may be important in the Var valley (approximately km 169 to 179); as well as in the Col du Lautaret on both sides. Tourist traffic can also be significant in the Tinée valley, the Ubaye valley, and Col de Vars (a little less in Couillole, Cayolle and Izoard). On the other hand, between the Col du Festre and Buis-les-Baronnies, the regions crossed are rather deserted, with few possibilities of refueling.
